Temperature dependences of
near IR spectra were studied for hydrated 1,2-diacylphosphatidyl-cholines.
1.4 m and 1.9 m bands corresponding to combined frequencies of deformational
and antisymmetric valence vibrations of water molecules were shown to undergo
significant changes in intensity at temperatures corresponding to transitions
between different liquid crystalline phases. This is attributed to changes
in the associated states of water in the bilayer structure.
